THE PAGEANT. Edited by C. Hazlewood Shannon and J. W. Gleeson White. London: Henry and Co.
The “Pageant” is a very high class annual of art and letters. The present is, we believe, but its second issue, but the publication has more than justified its existence. It avoids altogether the vulgarity and most of the eccentricity of such publications as the “Yellow Book” and the “Savoy.” Its editors, who, we need hardly say, are excellently equipped for their task, endeavour, to secure the best contemporary work. Their mere list of the artists and writers is, in fact, the best recommendation of the “Pageant.” Amongst the former are such names as Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Puvis de Chavannes, Watts, and Moreau. The authors include amongst others Austin Dobson, Edmund Gosse, Michael Field, Maeterlinck, and Lionel Johnson. The illustrations are, with one or two exceptions, admirably produced. Lovers of art should not miss this beautiful specimen of modern bookmaking.
