PAUL VERLAINE

This is a portrait etching of Paul Verlaine, showing his head and torso in frontal position. Only his right arm is in frame. This arm is resting on a flat surface, likely a table or shelf, that is chest-high. Verlaine is wearing a suit jacket, a shirt, and either a loose necktie or scarf. The etcher’s use of lines and crosshatching style makes it difficult to determine the details of Verlaine’s clothing. He is wearing a brimless cap (possibly a skullcap). His hair is obscured by his cap. He has bushy eyebrows as well as a full moustache and medium-length beard. He is wearing a ring (possibly a signet ring) on his right index finger. The left side of the image is in shadow. The flat surface Verlaine rests his arm on has some indeterminate flat shapes and curved lines on it.
