The lineblock image is in portrait orientation. The image shows a man standing and looking at the viewer with his hands behind his back and a rope tied around each ankle attaching him to a backward-facing herm behind him on the left [a herm is a statue that terminates at the top in a head, and sometimes torso with genitals, of a man, emerging out of a square-cut pillar; often, the herm represents the pagan god Pan]. The image had no border or background. The figure stands centrally in the foreground. He is wearing slippers, and just above each ankle rests a single loop of rope that connects his feet together, but allows them to be separate in a shoulder-width stance. The rope trails from his right ankle to the left of the page, rising up slightly to wrap multiple times in a knot around the base of the herm. The rope has extra slack left on the end that falls down and rests on the ground to the left.. The man is wearing pantaloons with a garland of leaves in a circle under each knee; a longer garland wraps around his waist. The pantaloons are white and the garlands are made of dark leaves. He wears a long sleeve shirt that has ornamented buttons up the front, enlarged and made to look like the leaves in the garlands. The shirt is a dark shade and baggy, with a wide, loose collar. There is a thin rod with a pointed tip emerging from under his left arm, which appears to be a giant paintbrush.. The paintbrush is angled diagonally, pointing up towards the right behind the man’s back. The man has a chest pocket that emerges from under his right arm and cuts down diagonally to the right. Inside the small pocket appears a small handkerchief. The man’s arms are out of sight behind his back. The man has his head turned slightly towards the right, but his eyes look the opposite way and down. He has defined high cheekbones and long ears that are elf-like. He has short dark hair that is parted in the middle. The herm in the left background is about half his height. The pillar of the herm widens as it goes up, ending with the torso of a male figure sculpted at the top, facing away and turned slightly to the right. The sculpted figure has no arms or legs, only a muscular torso and hip bones, with a small head with two small horns emerging from either side. Behind the herm iis a series of bushes and shrubs. They grow smaller as they reach the mid-point on the page. Just below the man’s right foot are the artist’s initials: “AB” [caps].
