**FOR THE PAGEANT, 1896**

Enclosed in a multi-ruled frame, the image, which is in portrait orientation, features a woman and two tigers marching in a pageant or parade. All three figures face left and walk across a cobblestone path. The woman wears a long dress with sandals, and her hair is tied in a bun at the back of her head. In her right hand, she carries a flag or banner. The flagpole reaches to the ground. The flag banner has “The Pageant” written across it as it waves around the woman’s head. The “E” in Pageant appears in small scale as part of the letter “G” at the centre, likely because the woman’s head would block the letter “E” from the viewer as it is drawn. The woman’s left arm hangs to her side, and she holds a laurel wreath in her hand. One tiger appears in full at the woman’s side in the foreground. The front half of the second tiger appears behind the woman at the right edge of the image. In the bottom right corner, between the two tigers and at the back end of the woman’s dress, a wild plant grows out of the cobblestones.
