PAG1-rothenstein-swinburne-jpg

he image is reproduced in reddish brown ink to match the sanguine chalk with which the image was drawn. The unframed image is a portrait sketch of the head and torso of Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) in three-quarter profile facing left with his arms folded against his chest. His face is detailed, with heavy shading falling on the left side of his face at the temple and cheek. His head is bald on top with tufts of hair around his ears. He also wears a beard and moustache that are slightly unkept. His upper body is rudimentarily sketched, but it is possible to see that he is wearing a suit coat with shirt and collar. Two buttons are also along the left cuff of his suit jacket. No background or setting is provided by the artist.
