PAG1-housman-death-jpg

Displayed in portrait orientation, the reproduced image is an imaginative play on the myth of Narcissus. A group of 10 men are bathing nude in a river along the edge of the forest; some are gazing at their own image. The focal image is a young man with flowers in his thick curly hair, facing the viewer in full-frontal nudity, occupying the length of the image at right. He is standing on a lily pad and holds a lily in his left hand, which rests at his hip. His right arm is bent, and the palm of his right hand is open toward the viewer. At first it appears that he is gazing at himself, but another man emerging from the water holds his feet and gazes back up at him. There are flowering lily pads around the head of the man in the water. Behind these, to the left of the image, the foremost man in the group on the bank bends over on the water’s edge to look at his own reflection in the water. He is drying his back with a towel, holding one end of it to his hair with his left hand, and the other to his hip on his right side. Eight other men are in various positions along the shore. Three of these men have towels. Four of these men are on the shoreline near the water. One man sits on his towel in the grass and stares at the central figure with wide eyes. One other man along the shoreline casts a reflection in the water. Two men are behind the others; one stands in full view with his right arm reaching behind him to touch the other man who is mostly hidden as he leans on the first man’s left shoulder. Two men are leaning out of the trees and looking down at the water from the upper left side of the image. A third man sits between them with his right hand resting on one of their legs. The background shows that the river continues, and the image is framed with trees along the top half of the drawing. The artist signed with his initials, “LH” in the lower right corner.
