This image is a headpiece illustration to the poem “At Departing,” and is centered above the text. It is contained in a rectangular black frame, in landscape orientation. At the left of the image, a pilgrim is depicted in ¾ profile, facing away from the viewer towards a castle scene on the right. The pale-skinned man wears a green cap and holds the pilgrim’s symbols of a staff with scrip; the latter is shaped as a pale red bundle. The scene to the right depicts a white castle on a hill, topped with turrets in red, and purple. Small flashes of green grass can be seen between sections of the castle. The artist’s monogram is printed in the bottom left corner of the frame.
