ROSES

Image is of two children in a natural environment. One child is possibly a baby or a toddler, while the other is slightly older. These children are on the center-left side of the image. They are sitting on a curved retaining wall with a decorative pattern of squares along the outside surface. The older child is behind the younger in a reclined position. The older child has blonde, curly hair and is wearing a black cap with white embellishments (?). The older child is resting their cheek against the back of their hand which is propped up on the wall. They are looking forward. The younger child is wearing a patterned outfit and a decorated black cap that covers most of their hair. They are reaching over the wall towards a patch of roses in the bottom left corner of the image. In the bottom right corner, on the outside of the wall, there is a peacock whose head is turned away from the children; its tail is fanned out and the feathers extend over the wall. Behind the garden wall there are bushes and a field of grass indicated by horizontal lines. Towards the top center-right of the image there is a small bridge in the distance surrounded by dark trees. The artist's name, “Robert Brough” appears in the bottom right corner of the image along with the date, “96”. In the bottom left corner is the engraver’s name “Hare Sc.” The image is vertically displayed with an irregular black border.
