The wood-engraved image, printed in black ink, is in portrait orientation, outlined in a heavy black border. The image depicts a monumental Pan, sitting alone on a small island amidst a stormy sea. He is positioned in the centre-right middleground and takes up most of the image plane. At the top of the image, his curved horns curl in toward his head, which is heavily bearded; he plays the panpipes he holds in his right hand. In his left hand, which stretches down toward his cloven hooves, he holds what appears to be a dead bird or animal. Around his feet, both in the foreground and behind him, the sea swirls in violent waves. Behind him, enormous clouds roil against an otherwise empty sky, raining heavy showers down upon the water.
