On the left middleground, a pale-skinned young woman (Deirdre) with long, golden hair and a white dress stands atop a hill, eyes downcast, or perhaps shut in sleep, as she is dreaming. She looks down toward the right of the frame, at a young man (Naisi). He stands in the right foreground, only partly in frame, depicted from the waist up. Also pale-skinned, his head is raised to look up at the woman. He wears a purple robe with a red-and-black checked collar and sash. He holds a brown staff in his right hand. In the background, pink clouds contrast against a blue sky. The artist’s monogram is in the bottom left corner of the frame. Below the image is printed: “’Then in my dream I came night on him.’ Deirdre, Act I.”
