This hand-coloured half-page illustration is outlined in a thick, black square frame, centered above the text of “A Lyke-Wake Dirge.” In the left foreground, two pale-skinned figures, one in gray with black hair, one in white with golden hair, each carrying a lit candle, enter a gray-toned room. In the background of the room is a green-canopied bed with white sheets. A grey figure sits on a stool beside the bed, hunched over. To the right, a purple robed figure walks away from the bed. The artist’s monogram is in the bottom right.

A LYKE-WAKE DIRGE.

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,
    Everie nighte and alle,
Fire, and sleete, and candle-lighte,
    And Christe receive thy sauie.

When thou from hence away art past,
    Everie nighte and alle,
To Whinny-muir thou comest at last,
    And Christe receive thy saule.

If ever thou gavest hosen and shoon,
    Everie nighte and alle,
Sit thee down and put them on,
    And Christe receive thy saule.
