In the fifth volume of the Yellow Book,
which is now out, there is in ” The Pleasure
Pilgrim ” an outlining of an Englishwoman’s
notions of what an American girl really is.
The author’s name is Ella D’Arcy. Her idea
of the typical American young woman is so
unflattering that it becomes more amusing
than the author could ever have imagined.
This caricatured Daisy Miller in ” The
Pleasure Pilgrim ” falls in love with a
Britisher named Campbell, who is
wonderfully-made specimen of the genus cub.
It required one of his countrywomen to bring
him into existence ; for neither heaven nor
nature could be responsible for him. This
Campbell spurns the love of the rich Ameri-
can heiress, and what does she do but prompt-
ly commit suicide? If the story were much
longer the tired reader would feel tempted to
follow her example.
